Am I Cooked for S&T Off-Cycles?

Feel a bit lost on what to do. I am a final year undergrad at a target (Oxbridge/LSE/Imperial) in the UK and going on to do a Masters in Finance (Oxbridge/LSE/Imperial) next year. I have previous internship experience at a Hedge Fund, executive positions in the university Investment Club, and now going on to a BB Wealth Management internship but have realised that I want to work in S&T after this year's application season.

How competitive would I be for S&T Off-Cycles if I applied during my Masters? Would it be valuable to do the AmplifMe Summer Analyst programme for the S&T week which would give me direct S&T Experience which I could mention in my CV? Alternatively, how likely is it that the BB would allow me to internally transfer to the S&T Off-Cycle/Grad Scheme if I shadow and network within the trading floor?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Competitiveness for S&T Off-Cycles:
Your background is strong, especially with a target school undergrad, a Master's in Finance from a top institution, and prior experience at a hedge fund and in wealth management. However, S&T off-cycles are highly competitive, particularly in the UK, as they often have limited spots and are geared towards candidates with relevant experience. Your hedge fund internship and investment club leadership will help, but direct S&T experience would make you more competitive.

  2. Value of the AmplifyMe Programme:
Participating in the AmplifyMe Summer Analyst programme for the S&T week could be a great move. It provides hands-on experience in trading and markets, which you can highlight on your CV. This could bridge the gap in your direct S&T experience and demonstrate your commitment to the field.

  3. Internal Transfer Possibility:
Internal transfers to S&T from wealth management are possible but not guaranteed. To increase your chances:

    • Network aggressively: Build relationships with people on the trading floor during your internship. Shadowing traders and showing genuine interest in their work can make a strong impression.
    • Express your interest early: Let HR and your managers know about your aspirations to move into S&T.
    • Demonstrate relevant skills: Highlight your market knowledge, technical skills, and any trading-related experience (e.g., AmplifyMe).
  4. Additional Tips:

    • Master your technicals: Be prepared for technical interviews, as off-cycle interviews can be more challenging and skew towards experienced candidates.
    • Apply widely: Don’t limit yourself to just one BB or firm. Explore opportunities at other banks and even boutiques with strong S&T desks.
    • Leverage your Master's: Use your time during the Master's to network further and apply for off-cycles. Your academic background will still position you as an early-career candidate.

In summary, you have a solid foundation, but adding direct S&T experience (like AmplifyMe) and networking within your BB will significantly boost your chances.

  • Internally transfering at your BB is always very difficult but if you were to apply to the off-cycle S&T program at that bank, certainly you would be in with a good shot.
  • You're generally competitive I would say, but it would depend on (a) What your internship at the hedge fund involved, (b) your undergraduate subject and (c) your undergraduate grades.

You're definitely not cooked, S&T off-cycles and even grad programs are perfectly realistic given your experience and academics, particularly a top MFin. Obviously spread your bets and apply to middle markets and stuff also but you should be totally fine. Also, lots of places take final year students for summer analyst classes so apply to those if you can.

Also, JPM S&T off-cycles open in 2/3 days time :)
