Barclays has a strong reputation in certain areas of Sales & Trading, and based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights:

Best S&T Desks at Barclays:

  1. Credit Sales & Trading: Barclays is known for its strength in credit, particularly in London, but this reputation extends to its global operations. Their position in primary issuance and credit trading is solid, making this a strong desk to consider.
  2. Rates Sales & Trading: While not explicitly highlighted in the context, rates desks at major banks like Barclays often play a critical role in fixed income markets, and Barclays' credit strength could complement this area.
  3. Equity Derivatives/Exotics: Barclays has been noted for its structured investment products, which could make equity derivatives or exotics an interesting rotation.
  4. Emerging Markets: Barclays has shown strength in certain regions, such as Hong Kong, and emerging markets desks often provide exposure to high-growth areas.
  5. Commodities: While not as dominant as some other banks, Barclays has been mentioned in the context of private-side commodities trades, which could be worth exploring.

General Thoughts on Barclays:

  • Strengths: Historically, Barclays has been praised for its culture and internship offer rates. Their credit trading and structured products are standout areas.
  • Concerns: Recent feedback on WSO suggests some dissatisfaction with changes in policies, such as the removal of the A2A signing bonus and handling of analyst transitions. These changes have led to mixed opinions about the bank's culture and treatment of employees.
  • Opportunities: Barclays' focus on buyside LBO financing in its Tech coverage group and its strong credit trading capabilities could provide excellent learning opportunities and exit options.

Advice for Rotations:

  • Focus on desks that align with your long-term career goals. For example:
    • If you're interested in credit or fixed income, prioritize Credit Sales & Trading or Rates.
    • If you're drawn to structured products or derivatives, explore Equity Derivatives or Exotics.
    • If you're curious about global markets, consider Emerging Markets desks.

Barclays offers a solid platform, and your experience will largely depend on the desk and team you work with. Use your rotations to explore different areas and build relationships with senior professionals. Good luck with your summer analyst role!
