Best Trading Groups & Is this better in the long run than L/S equity stock picking as career?

This is a very broad question for someone just starting out:

What trading groups on the street in the BB have the widest exit ops / most highly sought after/highest paying skill set down the road? In fixed income? In equities? (derivatives/options?)

And just to compare this to the large long short hedge funds...there's a lot of long short demand at the large funds, but how likely can you raise a fund / build a great career through value investing and have stock picking be your skill set?

Not everyone can be Buffet but all the hedge fund founders all used to be traders regardless of how long/short their fund has become. Seems stock picking as a skill is too much of a commodity unless you end up at the big funds, no?
