Best way to move to NYC, LDN from Tokyo

Hi, started a few months ago as an agency/execution sales trader at a big BB in Tokyo (think GS, MS, JPM type).

My main goal is moving to a global financial center (ideally NYC) from Tokyo, and I want to know the best path to get there.

I am strongly considering an internal lateral transfer, but I am also open to going to a top MBA and re-recruiting for NYC associate roles. For context, I am not a US citizen, so visa sponsorship is a factor.

I’d love insight specifically on:

  • Internal transfer feasibility: How realistic is an internal lateral from Tokyo to NYC in agency execution / electronic sales trading? How common are permanent transfers vs. short-term rotational stints, and what does the timeline usually look like?
  • The MBA route: Given that structured post-MBA associate recruiting is largely focused on the primary side (IB/Cap Markets) and far rarer for S&T, does an MBA make sense if my goal is staying in markets/sales trading in the US, especially as an international candidate needing visa sponsorship?
  • Alternative paths: Are there other angles (e.g., cross-border desk coverage, lateraling externally to another shop in NYC, or targeting London first) that work better?

Thanks
