Contact HR or Interviewer?

I recently had a final round and it went well. HR said that they would get back to all candidates regardless of outcome (small group). I sent off some thank you e-mails and quickly got a response from the head and director of xxxxx trading (one of the interviewers):

"My pleasure.... yada yada... hope to hear from you soon"

I got a little wet, but calmed down quickly. Perhaps he was just being nice. I know all offers haven't gone out yet and I really want to work for this firm. I have another final round early this week and was thinking of asking about my status.

Should I, nicely, contact HR, the interviewer, or just leave it be? Apparently there has been some intense debate over who should be selected. My thinking is that if I signal to this firm that I am wanted elsewhere, they may be inclined to send an offer my way.

Just a thought... What do you think?

How do you know that there is "intense debate happening"? I was under the impression that interviewers just filled out a sheet with your review and such (unless you had an SA stint there)

If it's only been a few days, just leave it. Put it out of your head for now, and focus on your next interviewer. If you get the position, fantastic, if not, keep on moving forward.

If you don't hear anything within a week or so - depending on the timeline they gave to you, if they gave one to you - then you can reach out to your interviewer essentially thanking them again and just asking whether he/she happens to know if offers are still going out or if final decisions have been made - you don't need to contact HR.
