Day of Rage in Saudi Arabia

Charles Krauthammer has stated that March 11 is set to be a "day of rage" all over Saudi Arabia.

He also said "the Saudis have really good intelligence. They are tough. They’re ruthless and they’re effective."

So this could all get squashed before it ever happens. If not, this could bring a frenzy into the markets and the world if it catches fire.

What do you guys think?

I'm long UCO. Bring it on.

There was a great article in the WSJ a couple of weeks ago about Saudi Arabia - some ex-gov official I can't remember what position exactly. Talking about how almost every government agency is headed by a prince (thousands of them) and that the system is so bloated / inefficient that basic public services are starting to be ignored.

It said in the past couple months the sewage system in the 2nd largest city had backed up twice and flooded the streets with sewage?! Thats just asking for an uprising.

UCO : Great trade (used to be at least). The past couple of days it has not been moving 2x oil - I know long term compounded interest can tinker the results, but intra-day it seems to have fallen apart....

I think the Saudi Royal Family might want to sit down with the would-be demonstrators and start talking about more of a Jordanian-style constitutional democracy might look like.

Saudi Arabia can remain a Muslim state while liberalizing at the same time.

As for Konig, I hope he has managed to escape the Middle East. He may want to consider selling the beamer and start adjusting to an upper-middle-class lifestyle like the rest of us.

I love this country as much as you love yours. I will die for it as much as you will die for yours.

The fear here is not about the majority of the population. If you heard what he said, "Im not sure anything will happen on March 11". The percieved fear the global media has is of the shi'ite minority in the eastern province, which unfortunately happens to be where most of the oil is. We've had them under control for the past 50 years, now is not going to be any different...they're a minority. If they as much as cause a tiny disturbance, the ENTIRE country supports the government. NOTHING will happen.

The reason they might hold a "day of rage" is because they want to control things for the sake of controlling things. They're absolutely unqualified to do so though, and NOT because of their religious views. Saudi shi'ites are poorly educated (the majority choose to drop out of school around 8th or 9th grade). Yet they want to take part in high politics. WTF.

XD 144 people, most of them aren't even Saudis.

Interesting stuff, Konig, don't mind the shit too much, some of us like to hear a different perspective. But if you want people to stop talking smack about Saudis, how about lightening up on the smack talk about those Shi'ites? You gotta give respect to deserve respect.

My dad did a lot of business in MENA. Brought me back a lot of cool stuff when I was a kid. Never been to SA but I'd like to check it out for myself one day. Peace.

Good point. But that is pretty tough to do when it clearly says in their offshoot religious literature (published by scholars whom they worship...mind you, this is blasphemy. But forget this point for now.) that "If you kill a sunni, you will go to heaven", even though Sunni islam is the real deal (it only follows what the prophet and the Quran says, not some maniac Ayatollah that they literally worship!).

I try my best. I really do. But they keep screwing it up for themselves. Killing police officers on patrol for no obvious reason (one example: a highway patrolman was found dead in his squad car, 5 shots to the head in Qatif, thankfully the highway cameras caught the plates on the murderer's car). Abducting sunni children, mutilating them, and then dumping them in the off-skirts of the city. And these aren't even the "extremist" shi'ites.

((((A lot of the saudis I met at university in the US were shi'ite(left due to oppression back home) and they were as smart as the mainstream crowd.. dont be a hater they are ppl too))))

Well, he was sent on the Kingdom's expense through the King's scholarship program. As you can see, the government doesnt discriminate in big opportunities like this. Nobody understands why they are so hateful.

Sounds a lot like Catholic vs Protestant, or Protestant vs Mormon, to use an over-used analogy. That sucks, dude. The thing though is that I know a few Persians myself. Not the most devout kind but they are quite clever and Shi'ites (I've heard the "Shi'ite sheep" concept before from Sunnis). What's the deal? Difference between Persian Shi'ites and Arab ones?
