do hedge funds day trade?
i know "day trade" has amateur-like connotation, but i mean opening and closing the trades within the same day, and for strategies that are more like speculation rather than arbitrage or market making.

Yes, they do day trade mostly in case of a catalyst event. For example, if a biotech comes up with a stellar phase II/ III data, hedge funds do open a position in the morning and close it by the end of the day.
Many FX guys are dynamic and will open and close a position at their discretion. It could be a trade for 5 min or 5 hours 5 days or 5 weeks or 5 months.
