Equity market dead?

Keep hearing that FICC markets have much higher volume, much broader product offerings than equity market.

Does it mean that equity desks are dead end? I heard cash equity trading is gonna be replaced by machines......But, is Equity derivatives trading (option/ volatility) a good place to start career?

I've been hearing that if you're not a CS guy, or at least have substantial programming experience, you want to stay away from more liquid asset classes, and certainly as far as possible from anything that trades on screens. You want to be in like.. credit trading.
