Experience suited to banking but want to work in sales and trading
Hey guys I'll be in the 2025 SA application cycle, I'm extremely interested in breaking into markets and have been for a while. Did 4 springs (all of which either fast track or are non convertible). Doing a m&a internship with a small shop based in London this summer (first year summer). My worry is that all my experience is suited to banking or consulting (except my springs) instead of trading. Will this be a huge issue for me when I apply this year or do firms generally look at the transferable skills from similar roles?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your situation:
Transferable Skills: Firms do value transferable skills from similar roles. Your experience in M&A and consulting can be beneficial for sales and trading (S&T) roles. Key skills such as analytical thinking, financial modeling, and client interaction are highly relevant.
Highlight Relevant Experience: Emphasize the aspects of your M&A internship that are most relevant to S&T. For example, any experience with market analysis, client communication, or quick decision-making should be highlighted.
Networking and Mentorship: Engage with professionals in the S&T field. Networking can provide insights and potentially lead to mentorship opportunities, which can be invaluable for your application process.
Additional Preparation: Consider additional preparation specific to S&T. This could include online courses, certifications, or even participating in relevant forums and discussions on platforms like WSO.
Spring Internships: Your spring internships, even if non-convertible, demonstrate your interest and initial exposure to the markets. Make sure to articulate what you learned and how it has prepared you for a role in S&T.
Application Strategy: When applying, tailor your CV and cover letter to highlight your passion for markets and the relevant skills you've developed. Be clear about your career goals and how your background has prepared you for a role in S&T.
By focusing on these areas, you can effectively position yourself as a strong candidate for sales and trading roles despite your background in banking and consulting.

Not really, this early on it doesn’t really matter you can always say you gave banking a go but realised you prefer trading
