Credit & Rates Internship at Citadel Securities.

Hello all, I'm a junior in college and I have a credit and rates internship interview for Citadel Securities. I can't seem to find anything about the interview process for this specific role online. I was wondering if anyone could recommend how to prep for the technical questions they ask? I was thinking brainteasers and mental math, along with market related questions, but not completely sure and hoping anyone could help. Thanks.

For a Credit & Rates internship interview at Citadel Securities, preparation should focus on a mix of technical, market-related, and problem-solving skills. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can prepare:

1. Technical Knowledge

  • Bond Concepts: Review key topics like duration, convexity, and yield curves. These are often tested in interviews for roles involving credit and rates.
  • Options and Derivatives: Familiarize yourself with Hull's Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives for a solid foundation.
  • Fixed Income: Dive into Fabozzi's work on fixed income, focusing on relevant chapters that cover credit and rates.

2. Market Awareness

  • Stay updated on market movements, especially in credit and rates. Develop a routine of reading financial news (e.g., WSJ, FT) and tracking key economic indicators.
  • Be prepared to discuss your outlook on major economies (e.g., U.S., Eurozone) and their impact on credit and rates markets.

3. Mental Math and Brainteasers

  • Practice mental math regularly, as it’s a critical skill for trading and market roles. Speed and accuracy are key.
  • Prepare for brainteasers that test your logical thinking and problem-solving abilities. These are common in interviews to assess how you approach complex problems.

4. Behavioral and Fit Questions

  • Be ready to articulate why you’re interested in Citadel Securities and this specific role. Highlight your passion for markets and your ability to learn quickly.
  • Prepare a concise elevator pitch addressing why the industry, why the firm, and why you.

5. Case Studies and Pitches

  • Have a few trade ideas or pitches ready, particularly in the credit and rates space. These could include views on interest rate movements or credit spreads.
  • If possible, prepare a non-equities trade idea to stand out, as suggested in WSO threads.

6. General Tips

  • Maintain humility during the interview. If you don’t know an answer, admit it and make a best effort to reason through the problem.
  • Practice answering questions on camera or in a mock interview setting to build confidence and refine your delivery.

By combining technical preparation, market knowledge, and strong communication skills, you’ll be well-positioned to excel in your interview. Good luck!

No first-hand experience, but I'd imagine you should be preparing to for both normal QT stuff (stats, probability, game theory) and basics about markets (e.g. high level view on FOMC, upcoming Jackson Hole, AI Capex spending, etc).

For the markets side, their strategists' thought pieces are published on their website - worth a read as part of the prep.

No rocket science, standard behaviourals and maybe some technicals. Try the Canary Wharfian website for HireVue practice, it will analyse both your verbal and non-verbal comms and suggest how to fix mistakes
