FO Tech to Strats/Quant/Quant Dev

1 ) Due to start in a FO tech team, supporting a trading desk with various trading applications at an IB in Sept.  I've managed to secure a placement in the quant strat team at the same IB as part of my math finance masters.  I really don't want to stay in tech for too long, and want to know what are the best things I can do in the mean time to transition into a strats/quant or quant dev position?

2) Does anyone know what total compensation pay scales are like for the aforementioned positions at BBs and hedge funds?
