Going to QMUL, can I still achieve big in finance?

Going to study Econ at QMUL, tried to get UCL in clearing but was unsuccessful, so I have to go QMUL. Am I at a really bad disadvantage for breaking into finance (I want to become an equities sales trader) or can I still find opportunities in the city?

While Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is not traditionally considered a "target" school for top finance roles, it is still possible to break into the industry with the right strategy and effort. Here's what you need to focus on:

  1. Networking:

    • Attend finance-related events, career fairs, and networking sessions in London. Being in the city gives you access to numerous opportunities to connect with professionals.
    • Join finance societies at QMUL and consider attending events at nearby target schools like LSE, UCL, and Imperial. Many of their events are open to external students.
  2. Internships and Work Experience:

    • Start early by applying for spring weeks, summer internships, and part-time roles in finance. Even smaller firms or boutique experiences can help build your resume.
    • Leverage platforms like SEO London, which supports students from non-traditional backgrounds in securing finance roles.
  3. Academic Excellence:

    • Aim for a strong academic record (ideally a first-class degree). This will help offset any perceived disadvantage of not being from a target school.
  4. Skill Development:

    • Build technical skills in areas like Excel, financial modeling, and coding (Python, VBA). Resources like WSO's financial modeling courses can be invaluable.
    • Stay updated on market trends and develop a strong understanding of equities and sales trading.
  5. Applications Strategy:

    • Apply broadly to internships and graduate schemes, including both large banks and smaller firms. Tailor your applications to highlight your passion for equities sales trading and your proactive efforts to gain relevant experience.
  6. Leverage QMUL's Resources:

    • Use QMUL's career services to access job boards, mock interviews, and resume reviews. They may also have alumni in finance who can provide guidance.
  7. Persistence and Resilience:

    • Breaking into finance from a non-target school requires determination. Be prepared for setbacks and keep improving your profile.

While being at QMUL might mean you need to work harder to stand out, many professionals in finance have succeeded from non-target schools by being proactive, networking effectively, and demonstrating their skills and passion.
