GS - Equities: more than trading?

I was hoping to get some insight on the equities desk at GS. I understand that in addition to the trading of equities (and derivatives) they are also involved in more services such as financing, securities lending and other related products?

I have a vague understanding of what securities lending but my impression has always been that this is covered by the prime brokerage teams? How is that part of the work / these products covered by that desk different and what do they entail?

Any views on the above or that desk generally are appreciated. Thank you.
