Have to be a morning person in S&T?
Curious about everyone’s schedule in S&T. What’s tour start time and hours? Do you have to be a morning person and is it tolerable? I am interviewing with a small IB for a fixed income sales role and they want me to come in at 7am for an interview. I am not a morning person so am a little worried if this is the right job for me.
unlikely you will make it in the business if you can't even get your ass out of bed in the AM...consider a 9-5 job
Don’t worry about that. Lack of sleep will force you into earlier bedtime until that becomes normalized. I’d say first week or two is a slog but then it gets easier

I'm in physical commodities so I don't really fall under S&T branch but in an internship I had like 3 years ago I tried to be at desk by 7 to get a handle on the pipeline and in my commute I had to get out the door by 6 so I couldn't get held up by the morning train crossing that took I kid you not 30-45 minutes so I learned in an effin hurry what it's like to have to become a morning person. To respond to the question I love my job, don't think I could do it 30+ years but I don't think there's really any jobs quite as interesting as mine or given anywhere near the responsibility I have.
most fixed income are sitting at their desks doing business at 7am (in New York)...some even earlier...hardly anyone comes in after 7:30am
Used to do 6am-6pm as a BB S&T intern. Yeah it never gets "easy" waking up that early but you get used to it. Also being out at a reasonable hour helps a lot too. Can still eat what you want, gym, see friends/family, etc.
Do you still work in S&T?
am at a market maker now, doing 830am - 630pm ish consistently. better hours than sell side S&T since no clients to keep up with but each hour feels more stressful in a way, if that makes sense
Wake up at 300 am. 90 min+ commute. At desk by 5am. Out by 4 or 5pm. 2 hour commute home. Dinner at 7pm. Homework with kids until 9pm. Asleep 5 minutes later.
Every weekday.
For 15 years.
Jeez do yo work the Asian markets?
if you work in market that is active from london open thru New York close (Rates, FX), then this is accurate....tho the 2 hour commute can be removed if you can afford it
What about commodities in London?
7am is the happy medium, I've heard equities comes in a bit later, and I'm coming in at 6:30 in FX. Hard to imagine you'd be successful if you weren't a morning person. That said, it is definitely a change that can be made. And caffeine can help.
I have never been a morning person. In fact, a night owl. In college I would go to bed at 2am or later on a very regular basis.
Since starting in S&T, I haven’t had much of a choice but to get up at 5:55am to get into the office by 7am.
It was a little tough at first and it’s easy to fuck up but as long as you’re disciplined it’s not that bad. In fact I somewhat enjoy the satisfaction of seizing the day so early. I’ve learned I’m most productive between the hours of 7am and 10am.
Consider on west coast, 5am at least the day ends earlier hah. As others mentioned your brain/body adapt.
Sadly my kid wakes me up half the time now and my brain likes to check the markets at 3am now…
I'd consider myself the exact opposite of a morning person, and I've only done an internship, but I was going in around 7:30 and it was very doable. I can't explain it, but waking up early in college & in real life are completely different.
