HSBC S&T vs UBS AM (Chicago Office)
I landed offers at these two and was curious what the consensus is between the two of them in terms of exits and general prestige. I know they lead into different fields, especially with how heavily private markets focused the UBS Chicago office is, but I'm not really sure how good each is for their sought-after exit (HF for HSBC and REPE/PE/PC for UBS). Does anybody have any insight into either group?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
HSBC S&T: Sales and Trading roles, especially at a global bank like HSBC, can provide strong exit opportunities into hedge funds (HF) or asset management firms. However, the prestige and exit opportunities of HSBC's S&T division are generally considered to be below top-tier players like GS, MS, or JPM. If your goal is to transition into HFs, HSBC S&T could be a viable path, but it may not carry the same weight as other leading S&T platforms.
UBS AM (Chicago Office): UBS Asset Management in Chicago appears to have a strong focus on private markets, which aligns well with exits into Real Estate Private Equity (REPE), Private Equity (PE), or Principal Investing (PC). However, UBS's overall reputation in Chicago has been described as weaker compared to other firms like Citi or Baird/Blair, especially in investment banking. That said, for private markets-focused exits, UBS AM could still be a solid choice, particularly if you are targeting REPE or PE roles.
Key Considerations:
Ultimately, your decision should depend on your long-term career goals and which field (HFs vs. private markets) excites you more. Both roles have distinct paths, so aligning with your interests and exit aspirations is key.

First of all, do u like S&T or AM more? Once you make that clear, then we can come to a better decision
I can never understand why people ask these kind of questions but don't add any details.
Which details are you referring to?
[for the love of GOD, why do people ask these questions?!]
My friend, this is your first job which you haven't even started at a place you haven't chosen and you're thinking about exit?! Come on!
You spent a lot of time interviewing with those two places so surely you must have developed a feel for them, their people and the actual job. Which job appeals to you? Where do you think you fit? Which people do you prefer working with? Which place do you think will support your development and get you closer to your short terms goals?
These are the questions you should be asking. Good luck.
