Internal Mobility at JPM

Incoming analyst at JPM starting FT in July from a summer analyst conversion.

Thoroughly enjoyed my tenure within markets however through frequent conversations with other interns I’ve become increasingly drawn to IB.

I’m curious to know does anyone know what culture around internal mobility is like within the firm? I’m fully aware I would need at least 18mts/2yrs before submitting a transfer, but could anyone shed some color on stories they’ve heard about mobility in the firm.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, internal mobility at JP Morgan seems to be quite possible and even encouraged. Here are some key points:

  • Each group within the firm has a junior and senior mobility chair who deal with internal applicants. These individuals can be found listed somewhere on the intranet.
  • Your chances of moving are contingent on your review. If you're performing well and adding value, they would want you to stay at JP Morgan and be happy rather than move to another firm.
  • It's mentioned in the HR packet that applying to a different Line of Business (LOB) will not impact your chances of getting an offer at your desk. Your sponsor will be the only one in your group that knows that you are applying elsewhere.
  • JP Morgan actively encourages you to apply for mobility during the summer. They'd rather have you move over the summer than get back full-time and be constantly trying to move.
  • People move all the time across divisions. It's pretty easy if you're full-time.
  • The firm respects the group and the skill set it builds, plus the firm loves mobility so it's easy to move to another part of the bank.

Remember, it's important not to broadcast your intentions of moving to everyone. Keep it professional and discuss it with the appropriate people.
