JP Morgan Internal Mobility.. For Interns?
Hi all.
Wondering if anyone has experience with internal mobility at JP Morgan. Are interns able to take advantage of this to apply for a different intern role (i.e, from a BO/MO summer internship, to a structured finance role the following summer).
Thanks in advance. All help is appreciated.
You have to be play this very carefully. I can't speak about JP but just realize this will take a little bit of politics and saying the right thing at the right time, in addition to getting great feedback from your current role.
Follow these steps:
Avoid telling your team that you're looking to switch groups. They might become bitter after receiving this news and may give you bad feedback and ensure you don't get any more internships at the bank.
Kill it at your current role, get great feedback, become really friendly with the people on your team.
DO NOT TELL OTHER INTERNS OR ANYONE else about wanting to switch. When asked what you want to do, give some general answer that "you wanted to explore how your current plays a role at the bank, and that you're enjoying your time at the role". Telling anyone else about your intentions will not benefit you at all, and if word gets out, someone might spitefully destroy any chance you have at remaining an intern at the bank.
Network with people at the group you want to switch at (vps, associates, etc). Say that you learned about X group, and wanted to learn more about the role and how it fits within the confines of the bank/industry. Ask them if they want to grab lunch. Try to be as personable as possible so they have a good impression of you.
Figure out when performance reviews are submitted. Ideally, you want to network with the group you want to work at first, and then talk with HR after reviews are submitted in the event that people on your team want to spite you and put a wrench in your plans to switch groups (you might not be able to do this before performance reviews are posted as I've heard some programs have deadlines you have to adhere to if you want to switch groups. Tell them you loved your time at X, but you learned about group X and after speaking with person Y from that team, you would love to be able to intern at the group the next summer. HR will take it from there. If you think you had a good relationship with person Y, you can always reach out to Person Y and say "Hey, I've spoken with the program heads and asked them if I can intern at your group in the next summer. Are there any spots/any advice you can give me about your product/group?"
Most important thing is KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT about moving. Unfortunately, you have to pretend that you want to work in your group forever or else moving will be impossible. Don't let it slip to other interns. People have big mouths, especially interns who don't understand politics, and one word to the wrong person in a casual conversation, such as "Prospect and I believe the work is boring", will ruin any chance at switching and staying at the bank.
Follow the above, and you stand a good shot at switching.
