JP Morgan Internal Mobility.. For Interns?

Hi all.

Wondering if anyone has experience with internal mobility at JP Morgan. Are interns able to take advantage of this to apply for a different intern role (i.e, from a BO/MO summer internship, to a structured finance role the following summer).

Thanks in advance. All help is appreciated.

You have to be play this very carefully. I can't speak about JP but just realize this will take a little bit of politics and saying the right thing at the right time, in addition to getting great feedback from your current role.

Follow these steps:

Avoid telling your team that you're looking to switch groups. They might become bitter after receiving this news and may give you bad feedback and ensure you don't get any more internships at the bank.

Kill it at your current role, get great feedback, become really friendly with the people on your team.

DO NOT TELL OTHER INTERNS OR ANYONE else about wanting to switch. When asked what you want to do, give some general answer that "you wanted to explore how your current plays a role at the bank, and that you're enjoying your time at the role". Telling anyone else about your intentions will not benefit you at all, and if word gets out, someone might spitefully destroy any chance you have at remaining an intern at the bank.

Network with people at the group you want to switch at (vps, associates, etc). Say that you learned about X group, and wanted to learn more about the role and how it fits within the confines of the bank/industry. Ask them if they want to grab lunch. Try to be as personable as possible so they have a good impression of you.

Figure out when performance reviews are submitted. Ideally, you want to network with the group you want to work at first, and then talk with HR after reviews are submitted in the event that people on your team want to spite you and put a wrench in your plans to switch groups (you might not be able to do this before performance reviews are posted as I've heard some programs have deadlines you have to adhere to if you want to switch groups. Tell them you loved your time at X, but you learned about group X and after speaking with person Y from that team, you would love to be able to intern at the group the next summer. HR will take it from there. If you think you had a good relationship with person Y, you can always reach out to Person Y and say "Hey, I've spoken with the program heads and asked them if I can intern at your group in the next summer. Are there any spots/any advice you can give me about your product/group?"

Most important thing is KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT about moving. Unfortunately, you have to pretend that you want to work in your group forever or else moving will be impossible. Don't let it slip to other interns. People have big mouths, especially interns who don't understand politics, and one word to the wrong person in a casual conversation, such as "Prospect and I believe the work is boring", will ruin any chance at switching and staying at the bank.

Follow the above, and you stand a good shot at switching.

Yeah, thanks for replying. I get that I have to keep my mouth shut to get a good review + return (which idgaf about getting - but like you said, need it to get another internship at the bank). Going to be hard to network with the other teams though because JP went fully remote for EMEA. Thanks for the advice though.

Do you think it's possible to leverage the internship for a good internal reference? i.e, kill it there, and ask my boss (in a polite way - near the end of the internship) that i've while enjoying the summer, after learning more about x i'm really interested in y group and looking at applying for an internship in y group. Would really appreciate the reference, etc.

Totally understand that would kill the possibility of a return for the OG internship

An internal reference from your boss is risky and unnecessary for an internship program. HR is driving the program, which is why it's important that when your team writes your performance review, it's as positive as possible. HR will give you a shot to interview for that team only if you have a good written review.

Not sure you want to mention the switch to your boss. At the end of the internship you can mention to your boss something vague like, "HR is giving me opportunities at different offices in the firm, and encouraged me to explore different offices at the bank before I pick a full-time role. I hope you understand how grateful I am for having worked on the team, and that I think expanding my skillset by working in another office will help me with my career".

Be vague about telling your boss which office you want to switch at. Just say you and HR are looking at a few roles in the bank that would be a best fit with my skillset. Your boss might respond "let me know if you need me to make a call". Respond, "Thank you so much", and leave it at that. I don't recommend using the call as it might not provide any weight unless the boss is well known by people on the team. Your ability to get the role on a different team will be based on performance review and networking, and your ability to interview well. The call might not add any weight, but will bring about an unnecessary risk.

I was at JP Morgan a few summers ago in the CIB. Campus Recruiting sent out an email to all interns explicitly telling them that they were not able to move internally, primarily targeted at all of the Non-target Back Office Barry's that were trying to go to the CIB.

Very high risk and no shot at reward. I would advise against this.

JPM sucks for internal mobility as an intern and if you start there full time you have to sit in the same role for AT LEAST a full year before even posing the idea of switching groups and once that happens you would be lucky to switch by your 3rd year. Overall HR for interns is terrible - basically a do not ask me policy and very standoffish when it comes to helping interns that were placed in their bottom ranked groups even when it was their fault. (this is all for IB)

same for S&T....HR did not care about intern's desk preference...
