Georgetown Sophomore Transfer Into CAS (Can only matriculate Junior year into Mcdonough) or stay at Emory?

Does Georgetown CAS still have enough opportunities to recruit into top BB, EB if I transfer into sophomore fall? I doubt I will get into any clubs at Georgetown as a transfer, but at Emory, I am involved in a few clubs. I can matriculate into McDonough starting Junior year, but that's after recruiting.

Go to CAS. You will have to work harder to stay up to date with recruiting timelines, not being in the MSB, but if you transfer in junior year, you will lose the benefit of transferring almost entirely. For reference, i transferred into CAS and landed an IB internship

Thanks man. I have the same question to you as I have to the other guy. Do you think Georgetown would still be significantly better than Emory if, during my first semester, I only get into mid-tier clubs or no clubs at all, whereas at Emory I would be involved in several strong clubs?

I am interested in REGAL IB, REPE at a megafund such as Blackstone, or Sales & Trading, specifically electronic FX/G10, ideally in New York. How strong is Georgetown’s placement into REPE roles at megafunds like BX and into S&T roles at bulge-bracket banks?

You can and will get looks from CAS regardless of whether you are a transfer or not. getting into clubs as a transfer is tricky, but 1) is by no means a prerequisite to landing an offer and 2) there are many clubs on campus, and some are open access which are objectively bad but will give you enough reps to add on a resume / practice staying technically sharp. To compensate for the background you just have to work a bit harder on the internship front.

Would also note that the story for why you transferred and why IB needs to make sense and align. Being in the business school makes that easier, but will need a good, consistent explanation for both why you transferred over to CAS and why you want to do banking

Not significantly, but better overall if your goal is just to optimize your chances of getting looks. Georgetown REPE and REGL presence is very good in particular -- there are strong RE oriented clubs (GUPREF) and I can think of multilpe kids per year going to MF REPE. Incredibly strong presence at BofA REGL as well historically sending 2-3+ per year. These seats are ofc hard to land regardless of what school you go to. You may have a better chance of getting more interviews / foot in the door at GTown, but a better chance of converting the fewer interviews you get into offers at Emory assuming the clubs as you mentioned (helps build a stronger profile). Ultimately you will know how your clubs historically place at Emory which is important.

As far as overall placement goes just check out the Peak Framework target shcool list or whatever. Both place great

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transferring to Georgetown CAS as a sophomore with the intention of matriculating into McDonough by junior year presents both opportunities and challenges. Here's what you need to consider:

  1. Recruitment Timing: Recruiting for top BB (Bulge Bracket) and EB (Elite Boutique) banks typically happens during sophomore summer and early junior year. If you transfer to Georgetown CAS, you may face challenges since you won't be in McDonough during the critical recruiting period. This could limit your access to McDonough-specific resources and networks.

  2. Club Involvement: As a transfer student, breaking into competitive finance/consulting clubs at Georgetown can be tough. These clubs are highly sought after and often play a significant role in securing top-tier internships. If you're already involved in relevant clubs at Emory, this could give you an edge in networking and skill-building.

  3. Georgetown's Alumni Network: Georgetown has a strong alumni network in finance, particularly in NYC. Even from CAS, you can leverage this network, but it may require extra effort to stand out without the McDonough affiliation during recruiting.

  4. Emory's Placement: Emory, particularly Goizueta, has solid regional placement in cities like Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh. While it may not have the same NYC focus as Georgetown, being actively involved in clubs and maintaining strong academics can still position you well for IB roles.

Recommendation:

If your ultimate goal is NYC IB and you're confident in your ability to network aggressively and maintain top grades, Georgetown CAS could be a viable option. However, staying at Emory, where you're already established in clubs and have access to resources, might provide a more stable path to recruiting success. Consider where you feel you can maximize your opportunities and connections during the critical sophomore and junior years.

Yes, I know lots of CAS people who placed better than MSB people.

Clubs also don't matter all that much - I know people who were involved in minimal clubs who still placed better than those who were.

It may make a small difference given the current economy, but it will not make/break your application.

At Gtown, school and major does not matter at all; it's not Wharton to UPenn CAS.

I'd take Gtown over Emory, but then again Emory is still an awesome school.

Gtown 100% but be confident you can get in to clubs if you want the top offers (especially for RE)
