Graduated Jobless from an Ivy - Homelessness?
Hi guys, I need advice. This summer, I graduated from one of the ivies (considered a 'top target' here, whatever that means) without a single offer in hand despite recruiting for what it seems like 2 years now. I am done, mentally at my wit's end, and cannot tell if my situation is bad enough that I should give up or keep pushing (or if I would be delusional to do so). I have a 1590 SAT I self-studied for, a double major in Economics and Mathematics, and around a 3.7 GPA (used to be 3.8 throughout recruiting, went down senior spring because I was stressed out of my mind trying to interview/land a job before graduation and genuinely thought I was going to be homeless). The biggest constraint has been me being an international student: for context, There is near-zero presence of alums from my country in U.S. professional spaces. Hence, I was cooked for what it seemed liked built-in referral pipelines internationals from larger countries had, and was very late to understand the recruiting game (I figured out what IB was and why one would pursue it + my genuine passion for finance spring of sophomore year, by which finance recruiting was essentially over for the class of 2026). I figured out the recruiting 'game' through painful trial and error by junior winter and have been relentlessly applying to firms ever since. As you know, that is also when the current administration came to power and started to tighten visa sponsorship, and most firms previously sponsoring no longer did for my class.
Now, to understand why I am striving for a U.S. role: I come from a third world country where: a) my degree is useless and has zero value there, and there are no consulting/finance industries b) even with my degree, I will not get a decent job because the country is one of the most corrupt in the world -- unless you have political clout and connections, you simply won't get a decent job. I grew up watching my highly educated parents constantly get fucked over by the government, leading us to grow up in poverty, and I swore I would never let this happen again. c) the country is religious and conservative and against women pursuing careers. As an agnostic woman, I do not feel safe there at all, and have trauma from the experience of living there as such. d) Other countries are also not really an easy option: I already have work authorization here, while recruiting for other countries will involve me needing sponsorship immediately to get hired, which does not make sense for most employers when they can hire internationals in the country if they wish. My passport is extremely weak and I don't qualify for any job without an employer sponsoring me to bring me into the country.
By some miracle, I was able to get an internship with a small P.E. shop in a country neighboring mine for junior summer through a cold application on linkedin (after probably 400+ cold apps) just when I thought it was over in June (!!!) of my junior summer. I was extremely devastated prior to that as I knew how important the junior summer internship is, and I swore to myself I would work my ass off no matter what it takes to secure a full-time offer for FT recruiting. In FT recruiting, in the fall, I got to the final round with a P.E. CDD consulting boutique and got rejected. I never made it to R1 with the MBBs (for context, they probably are the only firms in consulting left who sponsor) nor any of the econ consulting firms (they sponsor heavily). I kept recruiting, and throughout my senior year, I somehow got an interview for the D.E. Shaw Rotational Associates program (didn't pass R1), then an econ consulting boutique (didn't pass R1), then Lazard Shareholder Advisory and Defense out of nowhere in June (they never got back to me after my interviews), then a startup (I later realized they were milking me for free labor through their endless recruiting process, after which I got rejected), then Bridgewater Associates for Client Research + Reporting (I didn't make past hr screen -- according to her, 'they went with someone else from earlier'). I graduate jobless with zero clue what to do as I had savings for 2 months left and not even being able to afford a ticket back home. Then, out of the blue in July, I get an interview invite for BCG EH Associate (after getting rejected in May? I never reapplied... weird). I treat it as my last and only shot and basically case + prep full-time for this. I get past R1 in July, with final round end of August. I laser focus on prepping, probably did 60 cases with custom industry primers and notes (I have a stack of 300 pages of handwritten A4 papers from this). I even hire an ex-BCG partner coach for 2 sessions to tell me straight up anything that is holding me back because I genuinely thought I was making an investment and I saw zero other opportunities especially those that would hire a 2026 grad with sponsorship. I think I did well on the final round, yet I got rejected with zero feedback whatsoever. I genuinely am devastated. I poured my heart and soul into every single one of my interviews. I would ask gpt and claude to make me 100-page deep researched reports on the firm/industry/interview prep for every single process I went through. Every single fucking one, ammassing to what is probably 3k pages and hundreds and hours of prep outside my heavy coursework + the on-campus jobs I have to sustain myself. I've been trying to find jobs now to apply to, but it seems the combination of needing sponsorship + having already graduated narrows this down to essentially zero jobs today. I genuinely feel hopeless and I've never felt this way in my life, because once I know what to work on, I am always the one to relentlessly work my ass off for it. But now, there is no roadmap. There is nothing to do. I never applied to master's as many told me to because a) I cannot afford it (I attended my university on a full-ride + always worked part-time to support myself) b) I cannot take out loans as a noncitizen and I don't have family in the country who would co-sign. Every single day I now apply to everything I see, refreshing tens of job boards daily. I also restarted my cold outreach to alums and am spending every moment crafting personalized messages to any alum who might remotely be able to help me or provide info (I had stopped cold outreach while casing for BCG as I was burnt out and demotivated after endless coffee chats with probably 50+ alums throughout the year. They all give me hope by promising to help me on the call, but never actually do once I follow up). My savings are now left for a month of frugal groceries if I manage to find a friend to crash a couch with (my rent is ending in 10 days and I don't have any money to rent any new place). I cannot believe this is the outcome of my sacrifices and relentless pursuing? What am I doing wrong? I genuinely did not leave any single stone unturned. I genuinely don't even feel anything anymore and I write this post as a last resort of crying for help and in the faint hope that maybe, maybe there is something I can do that I did not consider. I'd appreciate any and all advice, because I genuinely think I am the only person in my class (and from everyone I know) who is in this boat. I feel like a failure for being given this opportunity and failing to convert it to anything at all. To me it feels a bit absurd that I ended up in such a vulnerable position of near homelessness -- basically, exactly where I was before college (my parents also dealt with housing insecurity growing up) after everything and it makes me lose hope that hard work and dedication get you anywhere. I genuinely hope there is something I can keep working hard on that will lead me anywhere out of this what seems like, at this point, truly endless hell.
P.S. I know you guys will show up, and I want to make it clear: I will happily leave the U.S., even go back home, if you can give me advice and/or a roadmap on how exactly I get a job/make a future for myself this way. Hell, I'd even be happy to: just please show me the way with your advice. Being here for four years, the U.S. recruiting system is the only one I know and the one I have work authorization for, unfortunately.
P.P.S. In prior discussions, I've been told that I am being 'elitist' with my job search and only considering top companies. I am not. These 'top' companies happen to be the only ones sponsoring, and hence only ones not filtering me out and interviewing me. I am genuinely open to any role as long as it will hire me and pay for my rent and food. I think I applied to a total of 3k+ jobs at this point.
