Is supply chain management beneficial? Specifically in physical trading?

Hey guys,

Are there any ex-supply chain management people/supply chain majors who work in physical commodities/energies trading or even in financials/derivates/market making? I see there are lots of people in this industry who have engineering backgrounds.

Cheers

Im in physical commodities, not energy. One of our senior traders was not a supply chain major but had a supply chain background at the beginning of their career. I would say it helps, because it teaches you to understand product flows and the importance of logistics in this job, but its not the reason why they are where they are in their career. It is the soft skills to build the relationships and a book of customers to be successful. Physical Trading is transforming through time, space, and form. Supply chain experience gives an insight into advantages in how to transform through space

In my opinion, a supply chain management degree (or formal training) isn't particularly useful. I have an economics degree, and have several years experience in commodities operations.

College supply chain management programs probably make it seem more academic than it is. Whereas I've found operations in commodities to all be about 1) thinking on your feet 2) being able to communicate your way out of problems 3) being able to handle stress.

None of those things can really be taught through some university course showing you GANTT charts or Microsoft project management tools
