Junior Trader being assigned a New Analyst
Hi,
I am a junior trader (associate level) on a fixed income desk three years out of undergrad. I help manage a book shared by 3 people total.
I've been assigned a new junior to report directly to me full time. He has 4 months of FT experience directly related to the desk, and 8 months of middle office xp supporting a trading desk. He's two years older than me. I was on a committee that selected him.
He was assigned to me for several reasons, mostly because I'm doing ~2/3 peoples worth of work and have been recognized as doing a good job in training a few other senior team members on how certain roles of the desk are done. I'm key man risk and my MD wants me to train him how to do my role.
I'm getting him set up on systems access and have given him a few good fixed income text books and spreadsheets to go through while he's on his current rotation. He joins in a month.
My plan is to get him to work on the ticketing, spreadsheets, mkt commentary etc before giving him a small portion of my risk limit after a few months before taking on larger positions at the ~1yr mark.
I would appreciate any advice anyone has on any of this, such as how to be a good manager or on any tips on how to leverage this experience down the road.
Thanks!
