Linear Rates

Are linear rates (swaps/treasuries) really good spots to be? Even if interested in macro, wouldn't vol desks even in other asset classes just be better - fxo, credit vol, equities macro indices? Feeling like the desk/skillset to target for the upcoming intern class interested in macro should be vol. Linear products in any asset class is just becoming more and more pure market making through electronic and hard to differentiate in the view of buyside.
