Longer hair for S&T recruiting, should I change it?
I’m recruiting for S&T and have naturally thick, wavy/slightly curly hair. It’s currently longer all around—the front and sides are long, and the back sticks out rather than being closely tapered.
I really like my hair and would prefer to keep the length, but I also don’t want something within my control to hurt me in recruiting.
For people who have recruited or work in S&T: Would you consider this acceptable if it’s clean and well-maintained, or would you recommend getting a more traditional haircut? If you’d change it, would you just clean up/taper the sides and back or go significantly shorter?
Looking for honest opinions, not reassurance.
Too hard to tell exactly how it looks with just a verbal description but I would advise looking professional to get the job and then doing whatever you want once you prove yourself. This is assuming that you are going into an environment that cares somewhat about appearing professional (banks, funds, corporates). If your interviewer is wearing shorts and a t shirt it probably doesn’t matter.
I would say for recruiting it's in your control - you should cut it and look clean and presentable ESPECIALLY if you are in college. I had super long hair as a male in college and cut it for IB recruiting, maybe I would have still got the job with it but I ended up cutting it short and professional and worked out for me
During banking I grew it out quite long again and was able to recruit very successfully with it long to port co finance role. Perception changes slightly once you're "in" the industry vs. a kid in college
Kind of depends on the desk and people. I wouldn't care. But if there's no upside but only downside risk, especially in recruiting I would cut it
Nothing unprofessional about natural hair. It’s not an unnatural colour so you shouldn’t hide who you are.
