This is my kid. She's an incoming math major/CS minor at a Seven Sisters (women's) college, and interested in the more technical/quant side of trading. I know liberal arts schools aren't traditional feeders, but is there a path here? Her school is part of a consortium with other schools, one of which has a full finance curriculum, meaning she could take courses in options, derivatives, etc.
Lastly, (I'm a little hesitant to mention this because it shouldn't matter, but I know sometimes it does for recruiting), she's also LGBT.
Definitely a path there (especially if at Barnard or Wellesley). Recommend networking early, reading about the industry, and keeping up with global markets. Try to apply to women’s, lgbt, and other early recruitment programs your sophomore year to land an internship.
For desks, most derivatives trading desks in S&T are quantitative and hire mostly technical backgrounds. Most desks will not care if you are LGBT whatsoever, so I wouldn’t worry there
