MBAs for Energy
Previously made the jump from a large consulting shop (Enel, SE, Siemens) and moved to the supply side as an originator. I always thought I would go back to school and get an MBA from a University that specializes in energy. The majority of people on the trade floor just have a bachelors degree. Anyone have an MBA or know of someone with an MBA that was able to differentiate themselves at a trade shop? Seems like it isn't valued as much as it would be in other industries.
Not an MBA but I did get a masters in economics with an oil and gas focus. It has helped me tremendously in my trading career and I think it would help most people if they were interested in the data science side of things. After the masters I was doing the typical trading route (analyst, scheduling, traded a small book for a bit) but then I slowly started to leverage the data science skills I learned with the masters to do more and more analytics type projects to help the trading org make decisions. My day to day now consists of creating trading strategies that I trade myself and leveraging internal/external data to help the physical traders make certain decisions. Having a trading background and knowing the statistics and data science to put data together to tell a story/help make trading decisions seems to be pretty rare.
Been on trade floors most of my life. I have an MBA. I didn't need it but it helped in the managerial alongside the financial aspect. Trading? Not at all.
Know some people who have them or did them for sure value from managerial side and branching out to do your own thing. No value as mentioned in trading even top traders who got moved to SVP I saw the firm just get them like harvard exec certificate or so. No on expects even a full on exec mba these days.
