MBS trading prep… lost

Hi, joining a megafund in an MBS trading group as an intern this summer. I’m halfway through Fabozzi’s Handbook of Mortgage-Backed Securities and I’m lost. I come from a real estate private equity background and I can’t grasp the concepts I’m reading. Does anyone have any online supplementary resources/lectures/courses that give some color on MBS/ABS trading at the intern level?

Ah, diving into the deep end with Fabozzi's Handbook, are we? That's quite the tome, and it's no surprise that it can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you're coming from a real estate private equity background. But fear not, I've got some resources that might just be the lifebuoy you need to stop you from feeling like you're treading water.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are a few suggestions to help you get a better grip on MBS/ABS trading:

  1. WSO Courses: There are some great courses right here on Wall Street Oasis that could be exactly what you're looking for. The WSO has a Data Analytics Master Program that includes over 12 courses and 50+ hours of content, which might touch on some of the statistical and analytical skills you'll need.

  2. Online Platforms: You might want to check out some online learning platforms like Coursera or edX. They often have finance courses that include sections on MBS/ABS trading. Look for courses on fixed income securities or financial markets that have a focus on securitized products.

  3. Practical Experience: Nothing beats hands-on experience. If you can get access to some trading simulation software or platforms, that could be incredibly beneficial. It allows you to apply what you're learning in a simulated environment, which can make the theoretical knowledge much more tangible.

  4. Networking: Reach out to professionals in the field. The WSO Networking Guide can be a goldmine for figuring out how to connect with people who can give you real-world advice and perhaps explain concepts in a way that resonates with your background.

  5. Supplementary Reading: Look for other books that are perhaps a bit more digestible than Fabozzi's. "Mortgage-Backed Securities: Products, Structuring, and Analytical Techniques" by Frank J. Fabozzi, Anand K. Bhattacharya, and William S. Berliner might be a good complement.

  6. Forums and Discussions: Keep an eye on the WSO forums. There are often discussions about MBS trading where you can ask questions and learn from others' experiences.

Remember, it's all about building a strong foundation and then layering on the complexity. Start with the basics and work your way up. And don't be too hard on yourself; MBS trading is a complex area, and it's normal to feel a bit lost at first. Keep at it, and you'll start to see the pieces fall into place. Good luck with your internship!
