No such thing as a most coveted desk (generally speaking). However, there always is an IDEAL desk for your given skillset/personality/desires. If you're a very quant-y person, you probably don't want an institutional equity sales desk. And the opposite is true for someone that is very outgoing and enjoys speaking with people, entertaining clients, building a business.

You just have to figure out what's best for you.

Just to give you an example, during my internship the most sought after desks were mortgages and credit trading. Why? well because people want what they think is popular/desired.

Interestingly, those desks were the ones that had the most interns rotating on (around 8 per rotation each). In the end, they. both hired 2 interns. **So 8 interns x 3 rotations = 24. 2 / 24 = 8.3% conversion rate. **

The desk I ended up on had a total of 14 interns pass through there during the summer. In the end, 3 of us received offers for that particular desk. 3/14 = 21.4% conversion rate. You get the idea... follow interests and forget about the most sought after desks unless those happen to be where your interest really are.
