Moving from IB to S&T

Recently joined a product group at an IB this summer. I find myself much more interested in the market my product group works in more than the deal related minutia that I often find myself bogged down in. Two questions; first: how feasible is this transition and second how long should / do I have to wait to make the move (if possible)?

Ah, the classic switcharoo! It's not uncommon to find your interests shifting once you're in the thick of things. Let's tackle your questions one by one.

  1. Feasibility of the transition: Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's definitely possible to make the transition from IB to S&T. It's not a walk in the park, but it's not scaling Everest either. You'll need to articulate why you're interested in the markets and how your experience in IB can be beneficial in S&T. Networking will be key here - try to connect with folks on the desks you're interested in.

  2. Timing: There's no hard and fast rule about when you can make the move. However, it might be beneficial to stick around in your current role for a bit to gain some experience and credibility. This could be anywhere from a year to two years. But remember, this is your journey, so you should make the move when it feels right for you.

Remember, it's all about how you sell your story and your passion for the markets. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
