Moving From S&T to IB - Is It Possible?
Hi everyone,
I'm a rising senior currently interning as a SA at a top BB (GS/MS/JPM) in Sales & Trading. I've enjoyed learning the ropes so far, but after having an earlier internship at a small IB and speaking with some alums at the firm, I've started to think that I might want to pursue investment banking instead.
Do you think it would be possible to internally move to the investment banking division before I start full time? Or is it better to instead apply to other banks for a FT position in banking? Any advice would be much appreciated!
You can try applying for FT roles in IB or even delaying your grad by a semester and recruiting for SA 2024 IB. It is an uphill battle but considering your experience I would say you can definitely have a good story as to why IB.
If you are able to get into a rotational S&T program all else failed, you might be able to work on a capital markets desk (DCM/ECM/Securitization etc.) and try to lateral to an IB group 1-2 years in although not sure if you’d be “demoted” at the start back to An1 or An2 IB
MS has a rotational analyst program and rotational associate program that allows you to move pretty easily between S&T and banking. Not sure what the process is like at the other two banks, however.
Regardless, if you are getting good feedback, you should communicate with HR your preference - these firms want to keep good people in the building.
Not an easy process. Made the move but it took about 1.5 years of networking and interviewing and had to lateral to a shitty boutique before getting a legit banking role
