Moving From S&T to IB - Is It Possible?

Hi everyone,

I'm a rising senior currently interning as a SA at a top BB (GS/MS/JPM) in Sales & Trading. I've enjoyed learning the ropes so far, but after having an earlier internship at a small IB and speaking with some alums at the firm, I've started to think that I might want to pursue investment banking instead.

Do you think it would be possible to internally move to the investment banking division before I start full time? Or is it better to instead apply to other banks for a FT position in banking? Any advice would be much appreciated!

You can try applying for FT roles in IB or even delaying your grad by a semester and recruiting for SA 2024 IB. It is an uphill battle but considering your experience I would say you can definitely have a good story as to why IB.

If you are able to get into a rotational S&T program all else failed, you might be able to work on a capital markets desk (DCM/ECM/Securitization etc.) and try to lateral to an IB group 1-2 years in although not sure if you’d be “demoted” at the start back to An1 or An2 IB
