Need help deciding my quantitative background at undergrad level
Alright so I have been pursuing my career goals of becoming a trader, maybe for a prop firm or a BB S&T out of College. Given I am not from a target school, I need some help in deciding my undergraduate degrees to benefit my skills. As of now, I am a Finance major and Econ minor. This is way too cliché, and I look like everyone else on paper. Also, a lot of the undergrad Econ courses that I have taken (I am a sophomore) are kinda BS and don't really benefit myself too much, nor do they prepare me for a trading job whatsoever. So now I am rethinking my choice of majors. Unfortunately, my B school requires an undergraduate minor in coloration with a major. So I want to keep my Finance major, and minor in either Math or Stat. My question is which will be more beneficial? I assume math because obviously it is more difficult, and is a matter of intellectual ability to be able to complete upper level math courses. However, I am worried that my current GPA of a 3.7 will start to suffer, and get fairly low and become uncompetitive with math. Given it is only a minor decision and not a major, it still does require a lot of upper level math courses like Analysis and Discrete Math. To be honest, I cannot even gauge if I will be good at these courses (how does one tell if they will be or not?) and I do not want to risk it and start doing intro courses and get A's but then get to upper level math's and be screwed and have to drop the minor... So that's why I've been considering Stat. It requires the same intro pre-req Calc I-II and Vector courses, but then goes towards Stat classes like Financial Mathematics 1&2 and Stochastic Processes which I feel are more relevant in terms of trading, and can be applied rather than the abstract methods of upper level math courses.
So which one is more appropriate for someone pursuing a trading career (derivatives trading, options trading specifically, maybe forex)? If anyone was or is a Math major or minor in here, please share about your experiences with difficulty levels, as well as the marginal benefit you believe a math major has over a stat major... Also another general question, does anyone on here believe that a double major is really worth it? I have been considering double majoring in Math/Stat, but it will set me back and I may not graduate on time. Because like I said, my B school requires a minor as well.. So I will have a ton of courses to do. let me know, thanks
