NY S&T --> Chicago IB

Hey guys, I have a question. I have a MM S&T Summer Analyst role coming up and they do offer a greater deal of internal mobility compared to other shops such as MS, GSBarclays, etc. I was curious to know if these places let you move internally from say NYC S&T to Chicago IB? I have a pretty strong interest in leaving NYC and exploring Chicago (for very personal reasons). If anyone here has done it before, then I'd greatly appreciate the input below as to how you internally moved cities (even if it wasn't the same firm and you had to apply I'd still like to know). Also, I go to a non-target school (but it has been on the rise), what are the odds I can pull off moving cities and lateral to IB

I would honestly say the move from S&T to IB is tougher than you might think. Usually from my experience I’ve seen people move from IB to S&T rather than the other way around. That’s not to say it’s not possible because it definitely is, but I would recommend trying to move internally as opposed to another firm before making the jump to IB in chicago. I’d also recommend making sure you have good modeling experience before trying to make the jump.

There are some small IB divisions of BB’s up in Chicago as well as some MM’s (Lincoln, William Blair, Harris Williams, etc…) I’ve heard from some guys I know that work for BB’s in Chicago that they’re consolidating the IB offices and making them go to NYC, so be careful of that as well.
