Oil Marketing? Need some information on this

I'm currently working in finance, trying to break into commodities, specifically energy, in a trading or research related role.

I don't have direct commodity experience, but I was offered an interview within a well regarded proprietary trading energy shop as an oil marketer. The job would be initially concerned with maintaining the "daily flow", as he put it.

I have a general idea of what a marketer is in the energy industry. However, it sounds like a middle office / logistics / optimization type role. While I would get some good exposure to the oil industry, I'm not sure if it would be useful en route to a trading or research related position (or if it's even a good / prestigious job).

Can anyone give me the inside scoop on the oil marketing job? Will it provide any useful exit opps? Does it pay well? How is it looked upon by traders and front office people?

Thanks for the help, I haven't been able to find any useful information on these questions yet, just background information on what marketers do.

This is time sensitive so appreciate any input!

Marketers (depending on their agreement) seek to move producer/gatherers/wellhead product efficiently and for the highest price possible--think of it as a whole-sale oil seller. You won't be taking complicated positions like a straight commodity trader but you'll definitely learn about the oil markets and take positions to lock in margin/maximize value.

It's definitely a good role to start out in if you are looking to be an oil trader.

Thanks for the input!

Would someone like me who is used to analyst and non-client facing type roles have a problem? I can communicate effectively but I'm not used to sales or client servicing.
