Owning Ships as a career
Not sure if this was the best place to put this, but I have seen other shipping related posts put in here, so I decided to put this in here as well. Does anyone have any experience with owning commercial ships, primarily dry bulk shipping. It seems very lucrative and is not talked much about on WSO. Ships are obviously very expensive to acquire, and shipping is highly cyclical, but it still seems like a pretty good career path to go down, either starting out as a trader at a commodities firm, or as a ship charterer.

Read a novel a few years ago called "The Shipping Man." Obviously won't teach you how to become a shipowner but a good book nonetheless.

Near impossible today as its very hard to acquire assets and grow fast. This is a mature business dominated by handful of firms in each locale with major barriers to entry. It would akin today to being an early stage crypto firm the last 5 years.
The places I have seen success is people who started to track shipping data, info and use new technologies to show to these old mature firms. But that industry is also now being bought up by PE firms and consolidating into s&p, enervus style monster firms.
It's not an easy biz, extremely competitive and transparent market. That said if you have the network and time things right, big things can happen. Try and read up on Swissmarine and how they got started. Probably the prototypical success story in dry bulk for a group that did not start 100 years ago in Greece or Norway.
