Programming Proficiency in Trading

When a trading intern is python proficient, do you expect them to be proficient in data analysis, and data visualization (e.g. pandas, matplotlib) or do you want them to be coding some machine learning model on top?

Ouch, that second bit hurt, was delving into some ML/DL techniques (not quant level) but thanks.

more like:

60%: took programming for everybody class and knows how to write hello world

30%: like leetcode easy ~ medium level, who knows how to write for loop and if conditions, and did some simple regression project in university class and claims they know ML. 

10%: those actually knows the basic math behind those ML concepts. have quite a good knowledge about statistical testing. Most of them have strong STEM backgrounds or even MFE. They got rejected during interviews at top quant HFs or prop shops and ended up here grunting lol.

But none of these matter tbf. Even the most quant-y trading desks like systematic MM or Vol don't expect you to have a to z knowledge about ML, but understanding optimization or volatility respectively, able to implement the adjustment to the model the desk employs, that is all. you'd be surprised to see many of the trading desks don't even need python programming. 

So long story short: no one expects you to be coding some machine learning model on top..and traders in those quant heavy desks already kind of get how proficient are you by looking at ur resume after talking with you so just be yourself.
