Prop trader net worth and lifestyle

Hey,

what would be the net worth of a good prop trader in a good firm like JS/optiver working for 4-8 years?
how is the lifestyle, do they spend on luxuries like rolexes and ferraris?
ik that the culture is much more casual than ib/pe, most of them are in hoodies, but do they live the ‘rich life’?

Given the volatility of your earnings, it wouldn’t make sense for them to spend large chunks of their money on rolexes or supercars etc. Don’t know but wouldn’t be surprised if most live modestly and save a large proportion of what they earn.

yeah job security in the prop space isn't great and given its such a niche area of finance (and w recruiting being super rigid in the UK) its not rly great for grabbing other non-quant finance gigs at the end of the stint so spending a shit ton makes 0 sense

The funny thing about a Ferrari is that once you can actually afford one, it seems a lot less cool...

If you're a car guy great, go buy one and enjoy the hell out of it.  But, to the vast majority of Prop Traders/PMs that don't care that much, it seems like an excessive expenditure on a depreciating asset that is probably less comfortable for day to day driving than some other plush SUV or sedan.

100% agree......

this ^

someone who runs money knows the value of appreciating vs depreciating assets. i think most of us cringe at the thought of spending that much on something that loses so much value.

beyond something like a nice sonos speaker a nice dinner or some nice shoes, i dont spend lavishly on anything. the thought alone of the insurance premiums on a super car make me die a little inside. idc if ive made a mill over the last 12 months, thats just a NPV negative proposition for me (obvi if you like cars and its worth it for you, more power to you).
