Prop Trading Questions
Of all the possible careers in finance, I seem to be most attracted to prop trading. I am a little worried about a few things. Say after 6 months to a year, I realize I am simply not good at it for whatever reason. What would I be able to move on to? Also say I do well and am pretty profitable and after 5 years I decide its time to move on. What exit opportunities are available?
There are lots of different types of prop trading.
If you are talking about whipping stocks around trying to trade on momentum and beat the market, being mediocre won't get you anywhere. It would be about as impressive "a mediocre poker player" on a resume.
If you are doing some kind of fundamental analysis, then that should be applicable to other finance jobs.
The real question is how old are you? Nobody will punish you for making mistakes at 22 or so, we all need to find our way. In terms of exit opps...well...trading is so different from the rest that I would say it's pretty limited ie you cannot become a financial director, cannot switch to a marketing career etc and joining a top position. But you can start something new, ie set up a business on your own for e.g..

You can always go back to school or master/mba and start over.
and if you were at a respectable firm, you'll probably be able to get a job at another firm.
