rates trading vs rates research for comp/exit opps

econ/math major at a target here, looking for insight on comparing careers in rates trading vs rates research/strategy.

For a long term goal of entering a macro hf, which career is better for exit opps? How does comp/hours compare between the two divisions? Finally, provided I can't break into global macro, what are the long term prospects of trading and strategy, respectively? I assume strategy is safer against technological change?
