teach yourself pandas and numpy in Python. maybe take a large data set such as historical stock price and try to create your own analysis of the data

 

this was literally just a suggestion of 2 important libraries to learn for data analysis in python & a large enough data set you could practice on to become comfortable with using them...

 

i'd say that half the S&T desks will have value from a programming background/ability....and the other half won't.

However, zero desks will see this knowledge and ability as a downside...there is only upside learning to code.

Also, you should be following markets and market news. Follow zerohedge on twitter while watching the markets (S&P futures, Treasury Bond Futures, Crude Oil, Gold). Read everything they post, and if you don't understand something, go use google to learn about it. This will be a fulltime job for most students as there is so much to learn.
