Rejected for MS IBD but scheduled first round for MS S&T

Yeah so as title says, basically, applied for both due to a long story. Does this mean they just thought I was a better fit for S&T so wouldn't let me interview or both or did the IBD team not like me but the S&T team did?

Just curious to know.

Thanks

Thought as much - strange though as my experience is definitely more IBD angled. Equal interest in both but got a previous internship in related industry PE/Corp Fin/M&A Advisory type deal and completed technicals course in investment banking.

recruiting is very random, can tell you firsthand that some CVs aren't even looked at because its a costly process, even after tests. People probably don't care that you have IBD-centered XP; S&T is just what you got out of the hat unfortunately.

Not sure why you're calling me a clown. I'd imagine S&T is slightly less competitive, for SA recruiting I got multiple S&T offers but struggled to land IBD interviews despite having M&A XP. Is what it is.

I had something similar happen when I was recruiting in college - applied for Investment Banking at STRH but was selected to interview for one of their structured product groups instead (still under the IB umbrella but not traditional IB).

I asked in one of the interviews and they said my background fit their group better - I had Investment Management internship and had more Econ/Math academic background than finance.

Ended up landing elsewhere in traditional IB.

Not sure how MS does it and probably a mix of different recruiting teams, but wanted to provide this data point. I’ve learned that recruiting isn’t as structured/ black & white as some people are led to believe - many factors outside the applicant’s control come into play.
