Reneging on top BB internship for top QT internship

Junior STEM major in college here. I took a BB trading internship offer for next summer from JPM/MS/GS in the spring but recently got quant trading offer from Jane Street/CitSec/SIG. Considering reneging and taking the QT offer and am looking for advice.

Hoping to hear from those more experienced in terms of expectation over medium/long term and how to evaluate options. Especially since I'm not sure in getting return for FT (harder for QT than BB), so would like to learn more about potential exits and future steps. Thanks.

Depends what u wanna do, do u wanna do trading or quant? If u got citadel and do well you’ll get a return, same with SIG, P72 and DE Shaw I heard are a little more strict with return offers, but end of the day like you take the quant and try to get a return. If u don’t get a return u take ur shiny Jane street resume to other companies for FT, get paid, and call it a day

He did internship at BB sophomore summer and liked it better. He’s still applying as QT for full time also, but mostly gunning for BB

If you choose S&T, think of it as long term career vs jumping to buy-side after 2 years. There’s more options on products to choose from at a BB. The rotational S&T internship lets you try out these various desks and see which one fits you best. With QT, you could end up locked in a niche you don’t like. That being said, recruiting FT S&T should be a breeze with a resume post QT. However, FT S&T is desk-specific and you wouldn’t get to try out various products that a rotational internship would offer. Would recommend looking up S&T product primers and talking to traders so that you get a sense of what these Desks do and if you are interested in those markets.

The people actually making hiring decisions (aka traders and salespeople) don’t know you yet. So you wouldn’t be burning bridges with them. HR is the only thing that could get into the way, but they have such little influence over FT recruitment that I wouldn’t worry about it. It would be different if you were reneging a FT offer as that screws things up quite a bit with the Desk’s headcount, budgeting, etc…. Hardest part with FT recruitment would be to find the asset class you want to be in + competing with people with more years of experience than you (look up postings of FT S&T roles to get a sense of what that could mean)
