Scoular?

Hi, I'm a sophomore at a non-target. I just got an offer from Scoular to work as a merchandising intern this summer. From the interview it seemed to be a great place to learn the fundamentals of grain trading. Obviously, they were talking themselves up in the interview but everything they said sounded reasonable. It's hard to find much on them online. Any senior monkeys have previous experience with them? Any advice would help.

Thank you all in advance.

Thank you so much for your response, I'm glad to hear they're well regarded. I was a little concerned about their relatively small size. Is there anything I should do before I start to better prepare me? Or anything I should specifically try to learn while I'm there? I've heard interning on a trading desk can be a lot like drinking from a fire house and I want to get as much out of it as possible.

They have a good reputation and you would learn a lot there. I'm buddies with a few guys that work there and I work with a few alumn from there.

In grain trading I wouldn't worry much about the size of the company, just worry about the size of you P&L. Smaller shops often allow you to be more flexible and move quicker than some of the big shops. At a small shop you get to be a bigger player on your team and you get exposed to more. The prestige factor is pretty insignificant. you can be a merchandiser at Cargill and while the name is respected your role was so limited that all you did was sit in a field office and bid farmers the price that the trader in Minneapolis passed down to you.

Regardless, small shop or big shop you will learn a ton and having the "merchandising intern" role on your resume will set you up well.

just note that Scoular can often instill a paranoid trading culture in their employees that diminishes the team feel. some of the traders I know there try to be overly secretive with their book and even try to keep their cards close to their chests among their teammates. I'm not saying that is the wrong culture, but it seems to create a culture shock for ex-scoular guys who move on.
