These are the Wall Street jobs being replaced by Robots

Here is an article in Bloomberg today, https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2017-wall-stre…, about the rise of automation in S&T. I was wondering whether people could share their own experiences in how automation/electronification is changing the jobs in their particular asset class with respect to each of sales/trading and research? (Please state whether your experience is buyside or sellside)

They are bad for traders. They lower volatility 98% of the time. 2% of the time when thinks get real they are not there or exacerbate moves. It means it's tough to get a good price trading a trend like this stock move. You can't sell rips and buy dips for the same kind of gains.

But if an event occurs you can quickly get crushed as the real liquidity that was in the market 10 years ago (prop traders or bank desks) isn't there.

It's why you witness flash crashes or last year I believe the pound dropped 15 cents in 20 minutes one day.

It makes basing entries off std deviations very tough

Thanks for the response but I was trying to slant this towards the jobs in each individual product asset class like the article does to see how relevant/reliable the article was

It's sort of funny how this was written just now, I happened to also come across this article. This has been a trend occurring for 20 years now, anyone who hasn't realized it by now is surely not going to last long. The less complex the product, the more quickly it will go mostly fully automated in the near future. That's just how it's going to be. Adapt or die.

I mean, I agree with it, I don’t have a counterpoint really. My point was mostly that it seems that there’s been a lot of buzz about this in the “mainstream” for the last year or two, when anyone who’s paid even a bit of attention should have seen this coming.

In general the uproar about “they took our jobs” is getting to be tiring, these same moronic viewpoints have been espoused for centuries now and it’s never correct and never will be.
