Trading at buyside firm - exit opps, industry etc
Hi all,
I will be starting my first post-grad job this fall in trading at a large investment management firm (BlackRock, Fidelity, vanguard, wellington mgmt, JPAM). However, I only understand trading from a sell-side perspective. Would anyone be able to shed some light on what a role here entails, and what my exit opportunities might be?
I can’t say anything about exit opps but can say what the jobs differences are:
At a bank a trader is a market maker, they are a specialist in a specific market and make a market (buy or sell prices)for clients that care about such. While doing so they manage the risk of their book and can take prop risk while doing such. This is the simple explanation of a bank trader. They are experts in one specific thing.
At a large AM, a trader is an execution trader for the investment team. They receive orders from the teams and then need to execute it at the best price possible. They don’t take risk, they don’t manage risk. They only execute. However, they execute a large variety of orders so need to know what is going on in many different markets as they are not executing only one item.
You can PM me for more question, I’m a sell side trader
