Trading Floor Fashion in London

Hey,
What is the dress code situation at trading floors in London BBs like Goldman,Deutsche and Barclays
I love suits to death and think make you look classy from those wearing casuals but don’t want to get wrong looks from seniors, is suit without a tie good for daily? Or just shirt and trouser like most people?
thanks

Most people still wear a suit trouser and a shirt but no jacket unless you’re cold. it’s changing though, more and more people dress smart casual. The reality is trading floors are disgusting, from the carpet to the ceiling, the desks, the air conditioning even the communal bathroom the office is closer to a frat house than the image you had of a bank in London (think Mr Banks from Marry Poppins). And you re going to spend the day sat in front of your computer and a computer has no taste for fashion. So you will inevitably feel overdressed but if you like it go for it, I like a nice suit myself. However given pay in sales and trading is getting lower every year (vs other divisions and taking inflation into account m) you ll find that a nice suit is probably at the bottom of your priorities. You ll still have people who tell you dress for the job you want and not for the one you have but if you are in that mindset you better go into politics or IBD where appearance is more important than substance.

Thanks for your response, I didn’t know trading floors are getting that bad in London.. Do you think this is because they now prefer to focus and spend on IBD division rather than s&t?
I’m in uni but tbh i liked trading since i was like 14-15 but have been thinking i should go in IB then continue to buy-side rather than joining trading because of the decline, i have always wanted to start a fund and trading seemed like the best way because most of the current legends like ken griffin, platt, cohen etc came from trading but yeah the times have changed a lot and probably in a couple of years even the complex products like rates and ficc may get automated and i am no math/CS genius….

If you want to be in the HF industry without massive maths/cs input I'd reccomend IBD/ER to Long/Short equity

Was literally just on GS London trading floor(s). Massive and not a disgusting place at all and is exposed to natural lighting due to the new(ish) building its in. That being said it's still relatively new and might deteriorate. A lot of traders just wear a shirt and jeans.
