Upcoming SA interview with MS Fixed Income. Any advice?
Hello Monkeys,
I will have an interview for a SA position with Morgan Stanley Fixed Income group at Houston. They do commodity tradings. I've been recruiting the banking job for a while and never expected to get an interview for s&t. I'm wondering if there are any skills they value and any must-known knowledge(except the basic market/pitch me a stock). I appreciate any insights you'd love to provide. Thank you!
bump. Having a first round with them in the coming weeks as well

Not from trading but here are my 2 cents.
1) be ready to answer job and company specific questions: why this bank (and why not other x bank), why trading, why commodity trading, what regulations have impacted S&T in the US
2) in commodity trading, macro is very important, so be aware of the current environment for commodities (specificly for O&G, there is Russia vs Ukraine war, understand how covid pandemics impacted oil prices, recent saudi arabia and opec production cuts)
3) be sure you understand at least the basics of commodities trading: what is contango, backwardation, why in a normal environment the forward price is higher than the spot, who is trading with the bank (is it an oil refinery, corporation, hedge funds, how they make money, what is crack spread), there is a lot here but mostly dependent on the commodity they are trading
I don't think they'll ask you to pitch a stock but if you can talk about the above, you should be ok
Thank you!! Those are very helpful suggestions. I will be prepared
