To excel in your Venture Capital (VC) internship, preparation and execution are key. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable tips:

1. Prepare in Advance

  • Understand the VC Landscape: Familiarize yourself with the basics of venture capital, including funding stages, term sheets, and cap tables. Resources like Venture Deals by Brad Feld and Mahendra Ramsinghani's The Business of Venture Capital are highly recommended.
  • Research the Firm: Study the portfolio companies, investment thesis, and sectors the firm focuses on. This will help you align your contributions with their goals.
  • Excel and PowerPoint Skills: Sharpen your Excel modeling and PowerPoint presentation skills. These are essential for tasks like financial analysis and creating pitch decks. WSO offers resources like Excel shortcuts and modeling best practices to get you up to speed.
  • Networking and Communication: Be ready to engage with founders, partners, and other stakeholders. Practice clear and concise communication, as you'll likely be involved in diligence calls or meetings.

2. During the Internship

  • Be Proactive: Take initiative in identifying areas where you can add value, such as market research, competitive analysis, or sourcing potential deals.
  • Master Diligence: Learn to ask insightful questions during diligence calls. For example, focus on market size, competitive positioning, and the startup's growth potential.
  • Showcase Analytical Skills: Be thorough in analyzing financials, market trends, and business models. Your ability to synthesize data into actionable insights will stand out.
  • Build Relationships: Develop rapport with the team and founders. Networking within the firm can lead to mentorship and future opportunities.
  • Stay Organized: Keep track of your tasks and deadlines. Use tools like Excel or project management software to manage your workload efficiently.

3. Post-Internship

  • Reflect and Document: Summarize your contributions and learnings. This will be valuable for future interviews and career planning.
  • Stay Connected: Maintain relationships with the team and portfolio companies. A strong network in VC can open doors to future roles.

By preparing thoroughly and staying proactive, you'll not only excel in your internship but also position yourself for long-term success in venture capital. Good luck!

You’re unlikely to get a ton of structure so you need to make it yourself. The two biggest value adds are helping investors with prep and handling any busywork available.

I’d ask to do the following:

  1. Take notes for associates on founder calls — you want to hear pitches live and understand the questions being asked
  2. Prep docs for calls — do as much research as you can on a company before the call and share them with associates. Anything that can make an investor sound smarter is valuable when they’re taking 4-5 calls a day
  3. Make charts/tables for memos — ask to contribute to the data analysis/presentation part of the memo so you can understand what the thesis is
