Day in the Life - Growth Equity Intern

I've been getting a lot of inbounds on Linkedin from students who are curious about GE. I interned at one of the larger growth firms so happy to share some experience. Would say this is an average day.

9AM: Roll into the office, bullpen is trickling in. Grab some fruit for breakfast and start looking at emails.

9:15-11AM: Analyst asks me to go through the portfolio of an early stage VC firm and see if any look like they fit our criteria. Make a doc outlining each company's employees, and a brief note about what they do. Come up with 3 that look interesting. Analyst skims it and decides to reach out to 1of them. I write the email.

11-11:30. Hop on an initial call with a prospective B2B software company that one of our analysts was meeting with, that I asked to join cause I thought the company seemed cool. It's a pass - they have 4 customers.

11:30-12: Grab some coffee and dick around with the other interns for a bit.

12-12:30PM: Grab lunch with bullpen.

12:30-3PM: Look for potential companies to source. Come up with 30 fintech companies and send them to an analyst that covers fintech. He says thanks and decides that 5 of them are worth reaching out to. None of them respond.

3:30-4PM: Join an initial meeting with a company I sourced that operates in a really cool niche. I'm pretty pumped for it. Company is pre-revenue - waste of time.

4-6PM: I ask analyst if he needs anything done lowkey expecting him to say no, but instead he asks me to help format a deck he's working on with our portcos so I work on that.

6PM: Grab dinner with bullpen.

6:45-9PM: Work on summarizing expert calls for a company we're trying to talk to prove we know shit about their industry. I send to analyst, he sends to company, they don't answer.

9PM-9:30: Analyst emails me that one of the companies I sourced responded for an initial call. Write up a bit of background about the company and send it off to him.

9:30: Log off and head home

9:30-10:30PM: analyst who asked me to format the deck wants more changes. I make them, and go to bed.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a detailed breakdown of a typical day in the life of a Growth Equity intern:

9:00 AM

  • Arrival at the Office: The bullpen is slowly filling up. Start the day by grabbing some fruit for breakfast and checking emails.

9:15 AM - 11:00 AM

  • Portfolio Review: An analyst requests a review of an early-stage VC firm's portfolio. Create a document outlining each company's employees and a brief description of their operations. Identify three companies that fit the criteria. The analyst reviews and decides to reach out to one of them. Draft the outreach email.

11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

  • Initial Call: Join an initial call with a prospective B2B software company. The company has only four customers, leading to a decision to pass on them.

11:30 AM - 12:00 PM

  • Break: Grab some coffee and socialize with other interns.

12:00 PM - 12:30 PM

  • Lunch: Have lunch with the bullpen team.

12:30 PM - 3:00 PM

  • Company Sourcing: Search for potential companies to source. Identify 30 fintech companies and send the list to an analyst specializing in fintech. The analyst finds five companies worth reaching out to, but none respond.

3:30 PM - 4:00 PM

  • Meeting: Attend an initial meeting with a company you sourced that operates in a niche market. The company is pre-revenue, making the meeting unproductive.

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

  • Deck Formatting: Offer to help an analyst, expecting a decline, but instead get tasked with formatting a deck for portfolio companies.

6:00 PM

  • Dinner: Have dinner with the bullpen team.

6:45 PM - 9:00 PM

9:00 PM - 9:30 PM

  • Follow-Up: Receive an email from an analyst about a company you sourced that responded for an initial call. Write up a background summary of the company and send it to the analyst.

9:30 PM

  • Log Off: Finish the day's work and head home.

9:30 PM - 10:30 PM

  • Additional Deck Changes: The analyst requests more changes to the deck. Make the necessary adjustments before going to bed.
