Deal sheet - have to include everything?

I left one of the high deal volume shops recently as a principal. I probably did 2x more deals than my principal counterparts at other funds.

when I’m sending new funds my deal sheet, is it expected I include all deals? If I just include my top 50% they’re all bangers. If I include all of them, still above average, but not like “holy shit”. But my volume of deals in my top 50% is probably what you’d expect from a principal at the median firm.

When crafting your deal sheet, it's not necessary to include every single deal, especially if doing so dilutes the overall impact of your experience. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s the approach you should consider:

  1. Focus on Quality Over Quantity: Highlight your top 50% of deals if they are "bangers." These deals will showcase your ability to execute high-impact transactions and deliver exceptional results. This aligns with the advice that quality matters more than sheer volume.

  2. Tailor to the Audience: If you're targeting funds that value high deal volume, you can subtly reference your overall volume without listing every deal. For example, you could mention in your introduction or summary that you’ve executed 2x the volume of deals compared to peers, while still focusing on the most impressive ones in the detailed list.

  3. Be Ready to Discuss All Deals: Even if you don’t include every deal on your sheet, be prepared to discuss the broader scope of your experience during interviews. This ensures you can address any questions about your overall track record.

  4. Structure for Impact: Organize your deal sheet to emphasize key metrics like deal size, multiples, valuation, and your specific role in the transaction. This will help potential employers quickly grasp the value you bring.

By focusing on your top-performing deals while strategically referencing your overall volume, you can present yourself as both impactful and prolific without overwhelming your audience.
