ER to Corporate Venture Fund?

Just curious lol was looking through LI and saw that people from MBB/MM/UMM land in these cool funds (think NBA, PGA) and was wondering if anyone could talk about what it takes/whether it would be possible for someone from ER to lateral. Don’t know shit about it

Based on previous WSO threads, transitioning from Equity Research (ER) to a Corporate Venture Fund is indeed possible. Here are some insights:

  1. Transferable Skills:

    • Analytical Skills: Your ability to analyze companies and industries in ER is highly valuable in venture funds.
    • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of specific sectors can be a significant advantage.
    • Financial Modeling: Proficiency in financial modeling and valuation is crucial.
  2. Networking:

    • Industry Contacts: Leverage your existing network within the industry. Reach out to contacts in corporate strategy or similar groups.
    • Alumni Networks: Utilize alumni networks from your educational background or previous employers.
  3. Experience:

    • Relevant Experience: Highlight any experience that aligns with venture capital, such as working on deals or understanding market trends.
    • Post-MBA Roles: Consider roles that are typically post-MBA functions, as your industry knowledge might outweigh the need for an MBA.
  4. Strategic Moves:

    • Lateral Moves: Look for opportunities to lateral into corporate development or strategy roles within companies you cover.
    • VC Firms: Smaller or newer VC firms might be more open to candidates from diverse backgrounds.
  5. Considerations:

    • Company Fit: Ensure the corporate venture fund aligns with your career goals and interests.
    • Long-Term Goals: Think about whether you want to stay in VC or transition to another role like corporate development or strategy in the future.
